Our Team
Jeff founded Palisade Wealth Management in 2008 (formerly Jacobs Equity). Before founding Palisade, Jeff received his law degree from Stanford Law School, after which he began his legal career in the Silicon Valley office of the global law firm Pillsbury Winthrop, where he represented a wide variety of clients in tax, estate planning, business, litigation, and intellectual property matters.
Prior to becoming a lawyer Jeff was an engineer, earning a Masters Degree in mechanical engineering on full fellowship from Stanford University and a Bachelors of Science in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Utah State University, where he was named the Outstanding Senior for the College of Engineering. In his first job after college, Jeff was part of a small team that handled the aerodynamics analysis for several missile programs for a major defense contractor.
Prior to affiliating with Palisade, Phil worked in the tech industry, most notably with Google where he spent a decade building and launching products, and with IDEO, a product design consultancy.
Phil holds two master's degrees from Stanford University, one in Mechanical Engineering and one in Management Science & Engineering, as well as a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Utah, with a minor in Computer Science.
Phil lives in Colorado with his wife and five children.
How we're Different
Advisory Structure
Fiduciary Standard
We are a fiduciary for our clients, which means we are legally and ethically obligated to act in our client’s best interest at all times. In contrast, non-fiduciary advisors are legally allowed (and often incentivized) to recommend investments that are not in their client’s best interest.
Fee-only Advice
We are compensated exclusively by the fees our clients pay directly to us for advice and services. Unlike many advisors, we do not earn commissions or fees from selling financial products (mutual funds, annuities, insurance, etc).
Minimized Conflict of Interest
Our compensation structure frees us to recommend whatever investments are best suited to our clients’ needs, whereas commission-based advisors have an inherent conflict of interest as their income is directly tied to product sales.
Independent Ownership
We are independently owned and are not beholden to the products or services of a particular brokerage or investment company. In contrast, many advisors are affiliated with a broker or investment company, biasing them towards that company’s products or services.
Client Relationship
Superior Customer Service
Our advisors have direct, personal relationships with their clients, handling all client matters personally and promptly. This is in contrast to the common practice of advisors handing clients off to various support staff or call centers, causing disorientation and delays.
Direct Portfolio Oversight
We directly manage all aspects of our client portfolios, ensuring that our investment decisions align with the client’s circumstances and preferences. Unfortunately, many advisors outsource client portfolios to third-party investment managers, adding unnecessary fees and increasing the chances that the portfolio is ill-suited to the client’s situation.
Single Comprehensive Fee
We charge a single, comprehensive fee that covers all of our services, so clients know exactly how much they’re paying from day one. Conversely, it is not uncommon for advisors to charge separately for various services, exposing their clients to undisclosed additional fees or upsells down the road.
Accessible Advice
We work with clients of all sizes and believe that everyone should have access to sound investment advice. Unfortunately, many advisors only work with wealthy clients whose net worth is large enough to meet their asset minimums.
No Commitment Fees or Obligation
Our clients are free to leave at any time for any reason with no exit fee. We hope clients stay because the relationship is working, not because they are locked in. This is in contrast to some advisors who charge an exit or termination fee if the client leaves before a certain time period.
Investment Strategy
Academic Rigor
We ground our investment decisions on the best academic research of the last several decades, and strive for an objective and rational investment philosophy. This is in contrast to the often subjective and idiosyncratic investment strategies that many advisors employ, based on little more than gut feel or personal preference, often leading to underperformance over time.
Tax Minimization
We consider the tax consequences of every investment decision we make, with the goal of maximizing our clients’ after-tax returns. Many advisors trade in their client accounts with little to no thought of the taxes they are generating for their clients.
Individualized Planning
We customize our client portfolios for the unique financial and tax situation of each individual client. In contrast, many advisors drop their clients into a one-size-fits-all model portfolio that saves the advisor time but introduces risks for the client.
Accessible Advice
We consider it a core fiduciary responsibility to seek out the lowest-cost investment options and service providers for our clients. Unfortunately, many advisors fail to consider the high embedded fees, loads or annual expenses of the investments and service providers they utilize.
